Complex promotion mechanism in the German fourth division

  1. The German fourth division consists of five regions: North, West, Southwest, Northeast, and Bavaria.[1]
  2. There are only four promotion spots to the 3. Liga available for the five regional champions.[1]
  3. The champions of the West and Southwest regions are promoted directly.[1]
  4. The third promotion spot rotates among the remaining three regions on a three-year cycle.[1]
  5. More than 80 clubs are supporting the 'compass' model to reduce the number of regional leagues to four.[1]
